Partygoers have been flooding to bars and pubs this weekend, amid fears of a second lockdown and curfews.

Restrictions to control the spread of coronavirus were announced for the North East of England on September 18, including a 10pm curfew on pubs and bars.

A surge in the number of infections in Leeds has led to warning that it may see strict lockdown measures enforced like in other areas of West Yorkshire.

But coronavirus tightening its grip on the country didn’t stop revellers in Leeds and Newcastle dressing up on Saturday night and letting their hair down in the city centres.

Many appeared to be in great spirits including two lasses who raised their hands in the air as a musician sang in the streets.

While another woman gave her friend a piggyback in the bustling streets, which were brimming with punters.

The restrictions for the North East also affect Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland, South Tyneside, North Tyneside and County Durham.

Leeds recorded its highest ever daily increase of Covid-19 cases on Friday – a further 117 infections, with the largest previous rise on April 22, when 109 cases were reported.

Lockdowns will be put in place in Lancashire, Merseyside, Warrington, Halton, Wolverhampton, Oadby & Wigston, and parts of Bradford, Kirklees and Calderdale from Tuesday, September 22.

It will mean people cannot socialise in homes or gardens with people outside their household or “bubble”.

It comes after Health Secretary Matt Hancock urged people to report neighbours who are flouting lockdown rules to the local authorities, as strict new rules come into force.

Asked if he would report a neighbour flouting the rules to the authorities, Hancock replied: “Yes and everybody should.

Anyone who fails to self-isolate having tested positive for coronavirus will now face a maximum fine of £10,000 in England.

As of September 14, no more than six people from different households can gather inside or outside in England, with anyone ignoring the guidelines at risk of being fined up to £1,000.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said earlier this week “there’s no question” the UK is seeing a second wave of coronavirus infections.

He said: “We are seeing it in France, in Spain, across Europe – it has been absolutely, I’m afraid, inevitable we were going to see it in this country.”

It has also been announced families on low incomes across Britain will be handed £500 from the government if they have to quarantine for 14 days, in a bid to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

Millions will be eligible for the new grants, which do not have to be paid back, including those who receive certain benefits and lose income because they have to stay at home.

Those eligible for the £500 payments are people who have been told to quarantine by the NHS Test and Trace scheme, with nearly four million people on benefits in England eligible for the extra payment.

If someone has the killer virus they must self-isolate for 10 days, and those who have come into close contact with someone who has it must quarantine for 14 days.
