Only three months after the government green-lit gatherings of over six people, the rule has been retracted, with all gatherings now mandated to be six people or less again.
Failing to comply with the new rule will set you back £100 or, if you’re a serial/repeat offender, up to a maximum fine of £3200.
According to government guidelines, these rules apply to all social gatherings indoors and outdoors, which includes homes, pubs, restaurants and parks. They do not apply to schools, offices, workplaces, weddings or funerals with COVID-protection in place or organised team sports.
But what does this mean for studios and gyms – are fitness classes allowed? How will it affect those of you who were chomping at the bit to do your favourite gym workout again?
Well, according to No.10, gyms and studios fall into the ‘COVID-secure’ venue category, which means your normal routine shouldn’t be interrupted. Whilst many studios and gyms have cut their capacity by 50% and implemented a host of social-distancing measures, these new rules could mean that post-workout gabs with your bessies are seriously curtailed.
DW Fitness First for instance shared this with their clients: ‘Working with the Government and U.K. Active it has recognised the already COVID, secure social distancing measures that have been put in place across the sector. As such the proposed 6 person rule does not apply to the gym sector.’We will continue to operate our COVID secure social distancing policies across our sites and our Members are free to continue to enjoy, confidently and safely, our recently increased class timetables at DW Fitness First.’
Organisations like parkrun also remain unaffected, as, technically, they qualify as organised sports – welcome news to parkrun lovers who’ve been without the weekend runabout for months already.
