The facelifted 2021 Genesis G70 has been unveiled today, ahead of an Australian debut set for the first half of 2021.

Full details on the new-look premium sedan are still to come, but these newly released images offer a first look at the G70’s mid-life transformation.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that the Genesis G70 was first revealed, debuting in September 2017 as the long-anticipated little brother to the big Genesis G80 – the original Hyundai Genesis.

At the time, the G70’s styling was both a derivative of the bigger G80, while also revealing the more athletic lines the Genesis family would adopt in the years ahead.

With the global unveiling of the new-generation G80 in March 2020, and the new GV80 SUV a few months before, it was clear Genesis was undertaking a more revolutionary styling direction.

As with its bigger siblings, the facelifted G70 introduces the brand’s new crest grille design and quad lighting design at both ends – “inspired by the soaring wings of the Genesis logo”.

New bumpers also feature, but the mid-sized sedan’s exterior styling is otherwise mostly unchanged except for a smaller, more understated brake vent behind the front wheels.

Changes in the cabin are less significant, although the car’s infotainment display is given a much needed boost through the introduction of a bigger 10.25-inch display with, at last, an interface design unique to the Genesis brand.

These same infotainment advancements were made with the new G80 and GV80, but the use of Hyundai’s standard infotainment in the pre-facelift G70 was a mark against it in the premium stakes.

No other details have been offered at this stage, although we anticipate a number of important powertrain changes.

Power – at least in top models – is expected to be supplied by the G80’s newer, larger 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, producing 279kW and 588Nm. This would replace the 272kW/510Nm 3.3-litre unit that drives the current model.

Of course, as we’ve seen with the facelifted Kia Stinger, it is entirely possible the G70 will continue with its existing V6.

The current G70 also gets 180kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, which will likely be replaced by the G80’s new 223kW/421Nm 2.5-litre turbo four.
